Film Studies: What I want to do and why?
For my Short Film i'm keen to create a dynamic and immersive tone, with the audience being able to connect and become attached to the characters. This is will help me to develop a true narrative which excites and thrills the audience as their entertained throughout. This is an aspect of film I enjoy and am keen to achieve and explore further throughout the Short Film production process.
To achieve this feel and tone incorporating important Micro elements such as Mise-en scene in the form of Facial expressions and movement will help to translate and create the variety of atmosphere's and emotions my character will experience due to the planned limited use of dialogue in my film. These are elements and aspects which are commonly used in Sci-fi, drama genre films which often try to achieve a dark, mysterious and earie feel. Which makes the audience feel tense, on edge and nervous. Another stereotype of these genre films are the settings, however to still make my film feel grounded naturalistic in some way, I plan to use sets which i have easy access to. Such as Graveyards, parks, classrooms and Bedrooms as these environments still offer a great amount of potential to create diverse shots, scenes and cinematography.
Additionally its imperative that I also explore and consider other Micro and Macro-elements in the form of Costume and Lighting. Like discussed above even though i'm keen to create a Sci-fi, drama genre based film, I still want use naturalistic, authentic and original sets, costume and lighting. This is not only due to the fact that these are resources that I have access to, but also something in which i feel will help me to create a diverse and immersive experience and tone. As audiences will hopefully be left feeling satisfied and entertained. For my Short Film i plan for the scenes to be shot in a wide variety of locations ranging from School to a Graveyard. Thats why its critically important that I choose and design costumes which suit and match, as audiences thoughts don't become distracted and sway away from the film instead of the costume etc.
As for other elements including Lighting and Props, I plan to use natural light where possible to create a more naturalistic tone. Whereas Props is something in which I'm keen to use in particular so that they can fill in plot holes and explain situations, thoughts and emotions without the use of dialogue. In the case of one of my Production Diary Idea i plan to possibly use a book, watch or phone to show the Protagonists Travelling back in Time. Instead trying to create and devise a complicated sequence which may or may not involve or the need/use of CGI Effects.
Due to this feel and tone I want to create, it's likely that the narrative in places might be less realistic and authentic to really life, however similar films like Star Wars and Toy story still create characters that audiences can form strong bonds and relationships with. If that's through scripting scenarios and situations which people can relate back to or actions, feelings and emotions that are hard to ignore and sympathise about.
When it comes to the Look and Style of my Short Film, since the off, i've been very keen to create a diverse, contemporary and slick look. Through the use of Cuts and Transitions including invisible cuts, cutting on action and Jump cuts they will allow me to create a modern, clean feel during the editing process. The video attached below is a great example of various cuts and transitions, many which i plan to experiment with and incorporate into my short film. As i plan to devise scenes and scenarios which will allow me to incorporate quick cuts and transitions (Montage Scene etc.)
After my first Short Film earlier on in the year, I have learned a lot since and i am confident that i can improve on my previous attempt. One key aspect and problem of my First film was the overall narrative and story of my film. With it being hard for audiences to understand and follow. As it involved major plot holes, due to the lack of planning and thoroughly thinking my idea and story through. However on the other hand one major successful aspect which was useful and effective was the editing, cuts and transitions between the scenes and angles. These were particular useful in keeping the audience engaged to keep the suspense and intrigue during critical scenes. With this being something I'm hoping and looking to carry through and improve in my next Short Film, which is vital if i want to give my film a striking, clean look. With Cinematography playing a huge part along with Location scouting when trying to shoot captivating and immersive scenes.
From my previous experiences, I was therefore able to take certain aspects from my film and understand why they worked and what i want to achieve going forward. From this i learned that i must first Master the Fundamentals of my story and narrative that i want to create before trying anything else so i dont become lost or confused during production.
Additionally after this, i must contain the story, this is especially important and relevant to short films due to their small scale and low budgets. With the saying the Smaller the Scope, the better the film tends to be, relating to the importance of minimising locations, time period and characters involved in Short Films. This will allow me to know and understand my limits and build my story around what I have access to. This will mean i'm not destined for failure even before production, for example don't base a story around an older character when i might only have access to younger cast, being a prime example of this. This is done in the set short films such as the Ellington Kid and The Fly.
The video below portrays and explains more about what i said above and something in which I'm able to not only take experience from but also learn and educate myself about also.
