Genre: Sci-fi, Drama - to create a dark, mysterious tone and atmosphere. I've chosen not to base the short film around a comedic genre as if feel it would be hard to write and direct. Furthermore its harder to create a comedic script/short film rather than a dark, mysterious, atmosphere in a short film.
Narrative: I plan mainly to have a linear narrative, so its easier for the audience to follow and understand what happening however I've planned for the present day and the past to overlap as the story is being told to keep audiences up to date in what happening. As for narrative theories i plan to use and apply Claude Levi-Strauss theory of Binary Opposites to show a clear contrast between good and the bad, weak and the powerful in the film.
Inspiration: From the list of short film stimulus's provided by the exam board, I took the most inspiration from the Ellington Kid, what i like most about the story and narrative was the jumping between present day and the past whilst he's telling his friend the story. This was something i wanted to incorporate into my film as i feel it keeps the audience guessing and make them unsure and doubt if the story is even real.
Blumer and Katz Theories:
Due to this its easier to apply more focus to the audience instead of the message my film might want to portray instead using Blumer and Katz Theory to understand the audience's possible reaction to my short film and what they might take away from it. I want to use Blumer and Katz Audience theories to understand the Entertainment and Diversion side of the short film as i want it to allow audiences to switch off and escape from their own reality and immerse themselves in the film. Furthermore Personal Relationships and understanding would be difficult to achieve in my short film due to the short screen and run time of just 5 mins, however its still important that audiences can still be allowed to build a close relationship/bond with the characters, mainly the possessed teenager as they might be able to relate to his pain of being alone, isolated and vulnerable. This in term relates strongly to Personal Identification within Blumer and Katz Audience Theories as this is where the audience can relate to a character or their situation or feelings and emotions.
If i wanted to portray a certain message or emotion from my short film which audiences would take away and can think about well after the film has ended, it would be the power ,dominance fearlessness of the possessed kid and what he can actual do and the power and potential he holds, as the dominate reading in the film would be that he's the evil within the film, however using Stuart Hall reception theory i think its much more possible that the audience will take an opposite reading from the film, instead rejecting my message and understanding and instead maybe creating a bond/relationship and understanding with the possessed kid as they understand and see through his evil and instead see his vulnerability and how he feels isolated, alone and scared.
