Film Studies Post 7 : Audience Research

 Film Studies Audience Research

Short Film Summary

A High school teenager lives his day to day life, as he soon becomes to realise that he’s stuck in a time loop. We see him relive the same day, starting gradually each time to expect and know what’s gonna happen. With each day starting off the same with his alarm and the day resetting when trips over, hitting his head. He realises this and starts to research and find out what is happening to him, until he discovers something (this isn’t shown to the audience). For the audience and everyone around him we don’t see him age at all, as he continues to relive the same day tens of thousands of time (Shown by a day counter). From this it cuts to him talking to a councillor, with the ending shot being him looking at a mirror. For everyone else he’s the same 17-year-old high school teenager. But when he sees his own reflection e.g. mirror, he’s aged like he would in real life and time. As he’s now an adult.

Seen above is my 30-60 second summary of my Short Film, to understand audiences initial thoughts I conducted a series of interviews. Using a wide mixture of ages, gender etc to receive feedback which I have discussed below.

To gather the most reliable and true feedback I decided to interview three people to best understand what they liked, enjoyed and would improve on my Short Film Summary.

Interview Profile

Name: Harry Lawton
Age: 17

After reading the summary of the short film, I loved and enjoyed the balance between both the grounded and naturalistic setting and the futuristic, non fictional and elaborate narrative. With it creating a striking and gripping feel, as I'm keen to now and discover what happens to the characters. With the ending, leaving me feel regret and worry for Eddie for his life and trauma he's felt. Making me almost trying to imagine what i would be and feel like if my Life was on a Loop.

Name: Matthew Barker
Age: 24

Compared to the first summary i saw, this has changed substantially with her leaving me intrigued, and interesting. As it grabbed me as a spectator, due to the complex storyline and characters within it. When I first read previous summaries, I wasn't pleased or left satisfied by the ending. With it feeling the original ending not feeling complete enough and not providing enough context into the character and his feelings, emotions.

Name: Tilly Branch
Age: 46

This Short Film Summary, compared to others I've watched, is totally different, complex and ambitious as i'm keen to see and watch how effectively the story will be condensed to fit within the 5 Minute requirements. With other, similar stories maybe needing longer to show the development, changes and emotions within there characters. For these reasons, in particular is why i'm intrigued and fascinated to see where the story will go.

My Response:

After receiving my feedback, from the people above, it was clear that I should look to best improve and focus upon the overall facial expressions and movement of my Characters. With these aspects best portraying and representing the emotions, feelings and atmosphere which I want to create. With the comments above talking about how important the main character is. With the complex storyline and 5 minute time restraints meaning, it's important and vital to find an effective and efficient way to best compact the story whilst not losing any key scenes. With audiences I feel being intrigued most due to the gradually journey and circumstances which surround and effect my protagonist.

To therefore adapt and apply this feedback, i plan to edit my Script (seen on Blog Post 8) to include more stage directions inform the appropriate actions and expressions where appropriate.
