Film Studies Blog Post 17 : Rough Cut

 Rough Cut

Due to COVID 19, I had limited time and access to both shooting locations and actors, meaning it was  impossible to start production of film when initially planned. However after receiving camera equipment I quickly Planned to create, shoot and edit the initial opening morning sequence of my Short Film Loop. With this being able to be shot entirely from home.

For this sequence, I took inspiration from Edgar Wright's work in particular, with working and directing films such as Shaun of the dead and baby Driver. However its not to so his films but in fact his editing techniques. With Edgar Wright making the Quick cut his own, by using the funny cinematic technique to better add comedic scene transitions. (The video below helps to explain this.) What was important from watching his work in particular was how the overall pace and rhythm of these transitions worked. As i was keen to achieve a quick, snappy tone to match the rushed feeling one might  experience in the mornings and also not to waste time, due to the film only being five minutes long. Whilst still allowing audiences to get a clear understanding and familiarity of the setting, genre, narrative etc.
